In December in our YWAM preschool class with Little Builders Preschool, our students were talking about Christmas. While we learned about the real reason for the season, Jesus, we also talked about all the other fun things that come with Christmas.
Along with meeting our new letter friend, Mr. Z, we also talked about snowmen. Now here in Mexico it doesn't snow so we have to use our imagination & remember things we've seen before in books & movies. We remembered that snowmen are made of balls of snow, with 3 buttons on their belly, 2 eyes, a carrot nose, a mouth, a scarf and a hat.
For our craft, we made these super cute cardboard tube snowmen. (Find the directions below).

They were super simple to make especially since our cardboard tubes were already white and only took us about 20 minutes total with 6 kids.

Supplies:
Ribbon (Different colors)
Black construction paper
Hole punch
Black felt
Orange construction
School white glue
Cardboard Tubes (1 per child)
Snowflake sequins (optional)
Directions:
To prep*, punch holes in the black construction paper & keep the small circles (these will be the buttons & eyes). Cut a hat shape out of the felt (we chose a top hat). Have the kids choose what color ribbon they would like to use for the scarf & cut a piece approx. 6 in (enough to wrap around the tube & overlap in front). Cut small triangles out of the orange construction paper (I folded the paper a few times & then cut the corners at a slight angle to make several at once).
Once all the pieces are prepped, have the child(ren) choose their cardboard tube (if they are not white, have the kids paint them first & allow to dry completely before moving forward).
Have the child decide where they would like to put the buttons & add drops of glue in those areas. (Because our class is several ages & developmental stages, all of our teachers did the glue instead of the kids.) Have the kids place the black circles onto the glue. Then repeat for the nose, mouth (we used left over strips of felt) and the eyes (some of our hole punches were used to create crescent moon shapes for the eyes by punching out the side of a circle that was already punched & some kids used these as the eyes). Next decide where to put the hat, some of ours were on the top in the front, some were on the back & some were glued on the inside. We then chose where to put the scarf & put a dot of glue there & wrapped the ribbon around the tube first glueing one side to the tube & crossing the other side over with a dot of glue to hold it in place.
Lastly, we decorated the snowmen with some snowflake sequins we had in our art closet. I also punched holes at the top on either side & tied a loop of ribbon so that it hangs. We hung ours in the classroom and sent them home before our break to be used as ornaments on the Christmas tree.
*if your child is old enough to use scissors & glue properly, have them cut out each part. Make sure to have a sample one ready for inspiration for those that can't quite visualize what their end product should look like.
